Tunstall Shard

Frozen in time, a finger print on an ancient Roman ceramic shard is evidence of the human link, before our time, of intent and skill. The TUNSTALL SHARD by sculptor Robert Erskine acknowledges the generations of people in Tunstall, whose occupations and skill created Tunstall’s fine reputation for outstanding quality, so characteristic of its industries.

The Shard’s installation ceremony took place on Monday 19th January 2009, at 11:30am with pupils from Mill Hill Primary School. Local councillors, representatives from Drandfield Properties, the sculptor Robert Erskine and members of the public in attendance.

After a long road trip from Peterborough under police escort, the sculpture arrived in staffordshire on Sunday morning 11th January 2009. The seven-tonne piece has been erected in Tunstall to commemorate the area’s pottery-making history. The Tunstall Shard as it will be known depicts a Shard of pottery with a finger print on either side. The sculpture was commissioned by the developers of the Alexandra Park site and designed by sculptor Robert Erskine. It was constructed by engineers at Midas Technologies in Peterborough. The Shard measures 30ft high by 30ft wide and cost in the region of £50,000.
